Ten Interesting Facts About the Pilgrims

The Mayflower was a cargo ship and not meant to carry the 102 Pilgrims and 30 crew members. There were two ships that were to sail to the New World, The Speedwell and The Mayflower. So the Mayflower sailed alone across the Atlantic Ocean.

6. There were no showers or laundry, so most of the people did not bathe and wore the same clothing for all sixty-six days of the voyage! Can you imagine the bugs, the dirt and the odor on that ship?

The girls and women prepared what the men had hunted: wild turkey, wild geese, wild duck, meat pies, lobsters, eels, clams, oysters, fresh fish of all kinds. The Mayflower was no luxury cruise.

3. A baby boy was born on board the Mayflower.

Do You Know These 10 Pilgrim Facts?

As you sit down to feast on turkey, sweet potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie this coming Thanksgiving, you can play a little trivia game using these ten interesting facts about the Pilgrims.

This outfit is so cute for baby’s first turkey day. The sailors called them “glib-glabbety puke stockings.”  Conversely, the Pilgrims did not like the sailors’ “salty” language.

The Pilgrims had very little variety in their diet. The Mayflower left Plymouth England on September 6, 1620.

8. The survivors has to bury their dead in the dark.

Another interesting fact is that by the time the journey was over, the sailors were impressed by their fortitude.

9. The Mayflower crew and the Pilgrims did not get along very well.. In order to not let the Native Americans who lived nearby know how much their ranks had shrank, they buried the dead in the dark so no one could see their decreasing numbers.

7. 2. The travelers had to spend most of the sixty-six days of the journey underneath the ship in cramped quarters.

Another interesting fact is that they did not sail to the New World on their first attempt. Native Americans Squanto and Samoset saved the day.

In the fall, when the harvest was great and bountiful, the Pilgrims decided to give thanks to G-d and their Native American friends for helping them through their first year in the New World.

10. The first Thanksgiving feast was based on the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

5. Because of the winds, they were unable to cook their meals and ate everything cold. It comes in several sizes.

4. They ate “hardtack”, a dry biscuit. Insects infested much of the food that was aboard the ship.

This interesting fact about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving tells more than what we are taught in school. The Native American guests brought five deer, popcorn, corn, carrots, cucumbers, turnips, onions, radishes, beets and cabbages.

During their first winter in Plimouth, more than half of the people died from illness. Not all of the Pilgrims left England because they wanted freedom from religious persecution.

The journey from England to the New World was an uncomfortable one. They did not settle in the first place they landed.

What was served at  the first Thanksgiving?

On November 9, 1620, the people spotted land at Cape Cod. There was no midnight buffet on the Mayflower and the food was awful.

So while you gobble up your turkey with family and friends, see if they know any of these ten interesting facts about the Pilgrims.

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot celebrates the fall harvest, and being religious people, the Pilgrims based their feast on this holiday found in the Bible.

Despite the horrid conditions on the Mayflower, a baby was born while it was crossing the ocean. There was no bathroom, so they had to use buckets to relieve themselves. Squanto taught the Pilgrims to plant with fertilizer, such as fish heads, with their seeds.

What makes this an interesting fact is their lack of hygiene. The Speedwell, made two attempts to leave with the Mayflower, but each time it leaked. While several of the Pilgrims (called Separatists) did want to flee England for religious freedom, others went to the New World for business opportunities, some were hired hands and some were servants.

1. The name of the baby was  Oceanus Hopkins. [1]

Their two Native American friends, Squanto and Samoset, spoke perfect English. After a search party of the healthiest men went out to find Plimouth, they again set sail and land on December 21.

The Pilgrims were unaccustomed to the sea, and frequently became sick

Threshold Preview : Windows 10 for the Not-Very-Techies

Simple slider switches asking you if you want to enable “Do Not Track” as default on Internet Explorer and whether you want Bing as your default search engine were prominent. Task View, which to be honest is similar to using good old ALT+Tab window switch, will allow you to switch through these virtual desktops. I can keep all my games on one virtual desktop (I have an ever-increasing Steam library) while working on web development on another and my InfoBarrel tasks on a third.

The virtual desktops that are created are not permanent. Now the reason I ask this out loud is because I have recently been using a local server stack called XAMPP and the default ports for Apache (I am digressing onto web servers for a moment) is the same as Skype. As you can see to the right, I have started up a few of these virtual desktops but I wonder if there is a bit of work to be done.

A Demonstration of ContinuumPublished by Microsoft

Windows StoreIf you never installed Windows 8 and live by your Android smart phone then you might not have come across the Windows Store before.

Continuum

Even if you don’t think you will use the new features; you might as well upgrade to restart the technical support clock!

Anyway….

It is worth pointing out that there is a new build which has been released in the last few weeks. It looks awful and Windows clearly needs to avoid a “one OS for all” policy.

InstallationIt was Quick – but don’t read too much into that

Now the most important thing to remember is that the installation process is definitely going to change. When you log off, they are gone. The third party solutions on Windows such as VirtuaWin already offer a vast extension of the new Microsoft “feature” and lets be honest, if you are already a virtual desktop power user then you are probably already using Ubuntu or another Linux distribution.

There is one problem though – and if they don’t change it I probably would not use Task View.

I tried out the new store downloading a few games and I found that for the games I downloaded there was no way to play the game with your keyboard. Continuum, from the demonstrations I have seen, show a Microsoft Surface tablet-hybrid and the basic idea is that when you attach the keyboard then it works like a netbook/laptop, but when you disconnect the keyboard then it will work like a tablet computer.

As you can see left, metro-style tiles will still be size adjustable, allowing a bigger preference to programs you use the most or are more likely to need when you are inebriated and using the touch screen on your laptop or tablet.

This is going to be an article that I consider “living” and I will update it as often as I can so that you can make an informed choice that you want to upgrade to Windows 10.

You can set up a user account that is completely local and I have yet to decide whether my Windows 10 administrator is going to be cut off from the online world. This is probably an edition of Windows that you would be familiar with as Windows 7 (or 8) Pro; there are other editions available for previewing if you are more likely to be heading for use in an enterprise environment.

Windows 10 is expected to be one the biggest overhauls of a Microsoft operating system since they abandoned Windows Millennium Edition. It was clearly optimised for a touchscreen.

In order to tell you about Windows 10, also known by it’s codename of Threshold, I have played with the Windows Technical Preview that has been available to download and install for some time. We are going to look at what is coming to a PC near you and why you should be considering your next OS upgrade.

The first installation of the Windows Technical Preview took less than 15 minutes. That means that some of this information might be slightly out of date while I catch up and see what we have here.

The Windows Store allows you to install many programs and apps directly from the shop window like you can for your most popular smart cell phones; and for those that are already familiar, most of the apps and games seem to be similar to those found for Windows 8.

Now I should really bring in my good lady wife. She has said she like the ideas of a tiled start menu though, so when the newer updates are ready we should hope for this to stick around.

This great thing is though, this is going to make it so much easier for the likes of you and me to go out and take photographs using the tablet’s camera and then almost immediately publishing them to InfoBarrel and connecting the keyboard to do all the writing!

If you are thinking that you will need different desktops because sometimes you use a Bluetooth keyboard with your Windows 10 tablet then fear not; Microsoft have thought of that too. That is not surprising as most of the final code is being written and only some of the apps and features were included.

During the installation process there were a number of options that are clearly tailored to making it as easy for first time installers as possible. The thing is though that Windows 10 is that it is increasingly tailored to be idiot proof like it’s rival Apple OS’s. She is severely sight impaired and has to use her gadget and devices on low resolutions. Not good when you want to use the same computer and don’t want to go fiddling with ports!

Windows 10, codenamed Threshold, is coming though.

If this is the intended feature then I can not see half of the point of it.

It’s Back! The Start MenuIt’s something I hate with Windows 8 installations. I started at Evaluation Build 9841 which is the first public beta preview. I wonder if this quiet push to re-engaging users with Microsoft products is going to be a long term issue.

As you can see, there is so much going on now with the new Windows 10 previews that I have had to start writing and as I experiment with the new features then I will update this piece as I go along.

If you already use Windows 8 or 8.1 then you will know that Microsoft prefer you to set up a Microsoft Account. There are actually great benefits to doing this such as easily accessing your Skype, e-mail and cloud storage with a single sign-on, as well as of course Microsoft also being able to selectively target you with advertising or storage add-ons.

Now I think that this is a great idea and would certainly appeal to me when I am working away from the office; but there is no mention as to whether this is also going to work with Windows 10 tablets that you then connect a keyboard to using Bluetooth!

If you are currently using Windows 7 –

you will want to upgrade for free to Windows 10

Multiple Desktops

New in Windows 10 (albeit not to other operating systems) is the virtual desktop. I doubt the Windows Store will ever be as strict as the Apple “iFranchise” but I bet someone somewhere with Windows 10 will eventually prove themselves to be a better idiot.

To Tie or Not To Tie?

If you are currently using Windows 8 (or 8.1) –

they are giving you a free upgrade to Windows 10.

Something I am wondering though, because I have not thought about it while logged onto Windows Technical Preview, is whether the computer ports will work differently. The rumor is that this preview is going to be locked down soon so not everything will be from the horses mouth (or rather my horse sized fingers) and I will also look to what everyone else is saying as well.

For the new Windows 10 desktop though, our Start Menu is making somewhat of a return albeit with subtle changes and incorporating metro style tiles in the new install. . Now that might be because I have opened up a number of virtual units, but then when I want to open a new instance of Internet Explorer the computer insists on going back to my first screens where I have an IE window open.

Task View

The Facebook app I also downloaded from the Windows Store is modified from the common mobile phone apps. The Start Menu was rubbish, otherwise known as non-existent, until the 8.1 update.

You see when I go into “desktop 2″ and open something like the Windows Store then it opens in all the later desktops

How to Pick and Bet on a Kentucky Derby Winner

Just like the lottery, big odds draw a lot of excitement and attention.

Although there are people more qualified to give Derby tips, like many financial commentators, I won’t let lack of expertise stop me.

When I go to the track, I don’t look at the racing form, jockeys, past history or pick horses with funny names. You can write to Don at don@donmcnay.com or read his award winning, syndicated column at www.donmcnay.com. I stick to it today.

Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day

– The Rolling Stones

This Blogger’s Books and Other Items from…

For whatever reason, my system has failed me at Kentucky Derbies. That is better than any other kind of bet.

I usually win enough money to pay for lunch.

Dad was superstitious and started to believe that my system was jinxing him.

Dad liked the excitement of big odds and big payoffs.

The professors said that betting to show will produce a winner 52% of the time. I can tell you what horses make the biggest mess. Quandi.

It drove him absolutely crazy.

The professors frown on exactas, daily doubles or any bet that exhibits large risk.. Betting to show fits with my overall philosophy about investing.

As the son of a professional gambler, people often ask me for betting advice.

The professors hate jackpots like the Pick-6.

The idea is that the marketplace will move with the crowd towards the best outcome.

I came to the conclusion that by living in Kentucky, I needed to know how to bet on horses.

Like in the investment world, the winner at race track is the person with a conservative style and discipline. He knew everything about the horse’s past performance, their breeding and who was riding them. If dad ever met the professors, he would have punched them in the nose.

It was written by two statistics professors and not the easiest book to read.

The book bases the ability to pick horses on an economic theory known as the wisdom of crowds.

I picked the horse because of an alumni connection to a man I had never met.

Bet on the horse that everyone else is betting on. He and I would go to Keeneland every session and we never picked the same horse.

If a horse moves from 10 to 1 to 2 to 1, it is probably a good horse to bet on.

Although I started going to race tracks before I was able to walk, I don’t know much about the horse industry. The last one I remember winning was Sunday Silence in 1989. I would bet $10 and win. (My mother was a sucker for horses with funny names.) I just follow the odds. I go the track a few times a year and bet small amounts.

Just like the lottery, you don’t see many people winning them.

Most of my equine knowledge was gleamed when I worked on the clean-up crew at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Bet on the horse to show, not to win or place. I can sum up the advice in two statements.

Thus the best advice may be to forget all the high powered systems and experts and give it your best guess.

He is the author of Son of a Son of a Gambler: Winners, Losers and What to Do When You When The Lottery.

I found a book called Racetrack Betting: The Professors’ Guide to Strategies by Peter Asch and Richard E. It is a driving force for web sites like Google. His owner, Arthur Hancock III, had graduated from Vanderbilt and I had received a Masters Degree from Vandy the year before. Slow and steady works in the financial markets and works at the track too. He would bet $100 on a horse and lose.

I stuck to my system. I didn’t pick Sunday Silence because of my system.

Betting to show is a practice that I follow religiously.

The wisdom of crowds concept is really popular now. It was a stupid reason for picking a horse but produced one of my few winners.

My father, a professional gambler, absolutely HATED my betting system
